Tips For Moving In The Rain

8 Essential Tips for Moving in the Rain

Everyone knows moving can be stressful anytime. But when the forecast calls for bad weather, it can make things even more challenging. Of course, you can move in summer to avoid some bad weather, but sometimes we can’t choose when we need to move. Here are some clever tips for moving in the rain that can help reduce the stress of moving.

Know the weather report

Keep tabs on what the weather will be like a week from your moving date. The best strategy for a rainy moving day is knowing what kind of weather to expect that day. If there is a sudden downpour, being prepared and having the right supplies will not catch you by surprise.

Stock up on heavy-duty garbage bags.

Use these bags to cover and protect any items you don’t want to get wet. You can wrap the items in the bag and transport them to the moving truck. You can even reuse them if you need to. Use garbage bags on clothing, lampshades, sofa cushions, books, etc. You can protect these items by covering them with a heavy-duty garbage bag.

Have towels close by to dry-off any items that get wet.

Once you load large items or boxes onto the moving truck, use a towel to wipe off any rain or moisture. Doing this can prevent damage to your items or water from leaking into your boxes. Pay close attention to wood furniture, as these items can easily stain.

Line the truck bed.

Don’t forget to pay attention to potential puddles that may form when your things are inside the moving truck. To prevent this from creating a mess, you can line the truck bed with flat cardboard boxes to soak up any rain or moisture in the moving truck.

Create a loading and unloading plan.

Set up an assembly line to decrease the time your boxes or furniture are in the rain. Place large, heavy items at the back of the truck where the driver’s cabin is. Load small and light items last to fill out the middle and tail end of the moving truck. Planning ahead of time will streamline the loading process. To speed up the loading process, assign a different job to everyone helping with the move. Some people can remain inside your home, while others help place items on the truck. An assembly line can prevent one or two people from running back and forth from your home to the moving truck. Furthermore, it can reduce the clean-up time later.

Create cover.

If possible, set up a tent or pop-up canopy to keep items transported to the moving truck as dry as possible. Creating a covered walking path can help keep your belongings from getting wet. You can also prevent dragging excess rain into the moving truck with you.

Avoid making a mess in your old home.

The last thing you want is trail mud into and out of your old home. Avoid this by having all your items packed and ready in the garage or the front of your home. Preserve your floors, prevent slips with makeshift mats, or put down sturdy cardboard. Place them at the entrance to your home and other potentially hazardous spots. Make sure you keep all your moving helpers safe from slipping and falling.
