Tips for Moving in the Summer
Moving in the summertime has many advantages. The weather tends to be nice, kids are out of school, and home buying is in its peak season. These are a few reasons why moving in the summertime is so popular. Unfortunately, summertime is the busy season for moving companies. Making prices higher and meeting your specific moving date can also be an issue.
You need to create a plan and organize your tasks to have a stress-free move. If you are planning a move this summer, here are some summer moving tips to make your move go smoothly during the busy moving season.

Hire Movers
The first thing to decide when planning a move is if you want to take on the take of a DIY move or hire a professional moving company to help you with the relocation. You may think DIY moving will save some money, but that is not always the case when you look at all the expenses associated with a DIY move. Such as gas, food, time off work, and hotel accommodations if you are long-distance moving. But even if you are moving across town, the assistance of hiring professional movers can save time, energy, and stress. Thus, if your budget allows, hire a moving company.
However, since you are moving in the summer, you need to hire a moving company as quickly as possible because this is their busiest time of the year. Plus, the busier they are means the price for their moving services may be higher during the summer. Not to mention, if you are trying to set up a move on a specific day, the earlier you contact a moving company, the better the odds of meeting your desired moving date.
Start Planning Early
After booking your movers, start making plans for your moving day. Create a moving timeline, and organize the tasks you wish to accomplish each week before your moving day. Sticking to your plan can help reduce your stress during the moving process. If possible, involve your family in the moving preparations as well. Give them each daily tasks to accomplish throughout the process. The more everyone participates, the easier a move can be.
Dress for the Weather
You should wear loose-fitting, lightweight, breathable fabrics when moving in the summer. Please avoid synthetic fabrics; they can force your body to sweat more. Also, avoid wearing dark clothing that can attract heat. Moving during the summertime usually means hot weather. You don’t want to overheat while packing boxes and loading the moving truck.
For footwear, don’t wear sandals; wear comfortable sneakers. And make sure the clothes you are wearing cover most of your body. All-day, picking up boxes can be hazardous to your forearms and fingers, so use gloves to protect your hands.
Be Careful with What You are Packing
A great way to save money when moving is to pack your belongings. Be careful when packing specific items. Some things cannot handle the heat of being in the back of a moving truck during the hot summer months, especially items like electronics. Do some research ahead of time before loading the moving truck. If you think an item could get damaged in the heat, pack it last, so it can be first off the truck when you unload.
Start Your Move Early in the Day
To beat the heat of hot summer afternoons, you should start loading the moving truck in the early morning. The high temperatures and humidity levels tend to be cooler in the early morning during the summer months. Additionally, the earlier you start, you may be able to beat traffic by finishing loading the truck earlier in the day. Our recommendation is to begin around 7 a.m. or earlier. If mornings are not a convenient time for your schedule (if you are planning a DIY move), we recommend you load the truck in the late afternoon or evening hours, with cooler temperatures being a better time to load the moving truck.
Take Care of Your Movers
If you decide to hire professional movers. Remember to have extra water, drinks, and cold, damp towels for the moving crew to stay hydrated and safe on a hot summer day. So keep a cooler full of water bottles for the movers to drink while loading the moving truck. Not to mention, you may not be the first house they have moved that day.
Take Special Care of Your Kids and Pets
The best option for your kids and pets on moving day is to have them stay with friends or family. Or you could arrange for your pets to stay at an animal daycare. This can keep them out of a hot home when the air conditioning is turned off because of the open doors. Furthermore, it can keep your kids and pets out of the movers’ way while they are loading the moving truck.
