Reasons to Live in Portland

A Guide to the Rose City

Are you planning to move to Portland, Oregon? There are many reasons to move to the Rose City, including outdoor activities, world-class breweries, and a great job market, to name a few. Please, take a moment and read our reasons for living in Portland.

Outdoor Lover’s Dream

Not only can you visit green spaces within city limits, such as Forest Park. The Columbia River Gorge and some of the country’s most beautiful waterfalls are within an hour of downtown Portland. The Gorge is perfect for hiking, biking, and just checking out the scenery. Not far from the Columbia River Gorge is Mount Hood. You can visit Oregon’s highest mountain peak. Mount Hood is home to three great ski resorts for wintertime fun. It also has camping sites for spending your time outdoors on summer weekends.

The Pearl District

If you’re planning to move to Portland or just visiting, you need to visit the Pearl District. The area is full of trendy shops, popular breweries, and great places to eat. Also, a part of the Pearl District is the world’s largest independent bookstore, Powell’s Books. Powell’s occupies an entire city block and houses approximately 1 million books.

Public Transportation

You can get around most of Portland without a car. Portland not only has a robust biking scene but also has a robust mass transit system. You can travel the region on one of Trimet’s five light rail lines. These rail lines connect downtown areas, the Portland International Airport (PDX), and the outlying neighborhoods. There are also over 80 bus lines to get you to where you need to go.

Food Trucks Everywhere

Portland is the LAND of food trucks. There is a wide range of tasty food trucks everywhere, from downtown to out in almost every neighborhood. There is a food truck for everyone, from vegan to BBQ or Mediterranean cuisine to bubble tea. You will find the dish that you were craving. It’s a food lover’s paradise.

No Sales Tax

Another reason to live in Portland is there is no sales tax. Oregon is one of just five states in the United States that doesn’t have a sales tax. It’s nice to know that when you buy something for $20, it costs only $20. Compare this to the city to the north, Seattle, where the sales tax is over 10%.

Job Market

Most people move to the Portland area for employment opportunities. Portland is home to over 25 major companies, including Intel, Tektronix, Nike, Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, and Precision Castparts are just a few employers. Portland has earned the nickname “Silicon Forest,” the number of tech companies in and around the city.
