Declutter your belongings

Start planning early for your move. Decide what belongings you want to take with you. So you leave enough time to have a garage sale to sell unwanted items or donate items you don’t want to a local charity. As a result of having fewer items to move, which means less weight, this tip can save you both time packing and money.

Packing tip #1: Declutter your house
Packing moving boxes

Invest in high-quality boxes

If you have decided to pack yourself for your upcoming move, another important tip is to invest in high-quality boxes. You can purchase high-quality boxes from local moving and storage companies or find heavy-duty boxes at your local hardware store. If your moving budget is tight, check out websites like boxgiver.com to find free used moving boxes people are giving away in your area.

Pack for an hour each day.

Set a timer and pack for at least one hour each day. For not waiting until the last minute to pack your belongings. Waiting to pack your belongings until it’s close to your moving day can cause unwanted stress.

Packing tip: Create a box labelling system

Set up a box labeling system

Create a box labeling system before you start packing for your move. Give each room a different color packing label. Following this tip, you can save yourself and the movers time.

Fill up your boxes…

Now that you have a packing system and a plan to pack for a least one hour per day, you can start packing. But remember to fill up your boxes and try not to leave any spaces. The more you can fit into a box, the fewer boxes you will need.

But don’t over-pack them…

Like the previous tip, you want to fill up your boxes, but you want to make sure you are overpacking, making them unsafe to carry. Be kind to your back, and don’t pack every book or textbook in one box. Remember, not only do you want to reduce moving stress, but you want to be safe and avoid injuring yourself or anyone that is helping you move.

Also, use the correct size boxes

Always use the correct size box for what you are packing. When packing your dishes, use a dish pack carton. These boxes can keep your dishes secure during transit. If you no longer have the original box for your television, use a television carton to keep it secure during transit. Also, it is a good idea to take it in the car with you during the move. Do this instead of putting it in the back of a moving truck.

Packing Tip: Repurpose items like hampers and laundry baskets to pack belongings

Repurpose household items for packing

You can repurpose certain household items for packing. For example, use hampers, suitcases, and laundry bins to pack belongings. Furthermore, you don’t need to pack clothing from most dressers or armoires.

Pack a moving essentials suitcase or tote

Remember to pack a suitcase for each family member with items for up to 3 days, including clothing, toiletries, medications, etc. Take this bag with you in the car to your new home.

Packing tip: use a suitcase or tote to pack essential items you will need first in your new home.
Packing tip: how to get creative packing jewelry

Creative ways to pack jewelry

First, don’t pack jewelry in a moving box. Take your valuables with you on moving day. If you don’t have a jewelry organizer, try these DIY tips when packing your jewelry.

Necklaces and bracelets

Use a snack-size Ziploc bag for necklaces and a freezer bag for bracelets. Remember, you can always use a cloth pouch if you don’t want to use plastic. Before placing the necklace in the bag, run the chain through a straw and clasp it. You can trim the straw if necessary. Also, for larger chains, you can use a toilet paper roll or a paper towel roll.

Earrings

For earrings, you can use a piece of sheet foam to keep them secure for your move. Pierce each earring through the foam and attach with either the earring back or tape. Tape down any dangling earrings to the foam sheet to secure them. On the other hand, if you don’t have sheet foam, a pill organizer can help move earrings or other small jewelry pieces.

Rings

You can use a pill organizer, which works great for keeping them organized. If you don’t own a pill organizer, use an egg carton. Place each ring in a separate cup. Additionally, use some crumbled-up packing paper to fill the top of the carton. Finally, secure the carton with packing tape. Also, label the carton; this way, your rings don’t get disposed of in the trash can.
